Can I learn martial arts from video's?

Yes .... No .... it depends. If you have no history in marital arts or any discipline for that matter you cannot adequately learn from a video no matter how well produced. If you use them in conjunction with a qualified sensei then you can learn from them. If you have attained a certain master while still gleaming guidance from a more experienced and qualified person you can learn from them.

  1. There needs to be some sort of feedback loop as well. You need to have someone critiquing your movement.

  2. The Japanese have a saying concerning 'stealing with the eyes'. You can learn from video, books, etc. It's simplistic to suggest you cannot. The quality of that learning then becomes the issue. I encourage my students to study video (YouTube) and books. The core of all learning is the identification of similiarities and differences. You learn more about your tactics and techniques by studying those of others and comparing them to yours. However, the degree of learning gets influenced by your current level of understanding. As in everything in life, it's complicated.

    1. Hi, John: Well said or should I say well commented/written/said. It is complicated and that is the point, right? - Charles

p.s. when I first purchased AJA Sensei's video's I had my doubts but much like you explain so well I did pick up on some important aspects from viewing his production of the Isshinryu system.
